On Thursday, May 7, hundreds of changemakers gathered at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus for IGNITE! 2026: The Power of Us.
Nonprofit professionals, board members, funders, consultants, advocates, and community partners came together for a full day of learning, connection, and conversation. But more than anything, the day offered a timely reminder:
The work of strengthening our communities was never meant to be carried alone.
That message echoed throughout the conference. It was present in the opening remarks, the workshop conversations, the questions raised in sessions, the hallway exchanges, and the reflections attendees continued sharing after the day was over.
This year’s theme, The Power of Us, was not just something we said. It was something people experienced.
The day opened with PhilanthropyMiami Executive Director Fernanda Jorgensen, MPH, acknowledging the very real challenges facing the nonprofit sector while reminding attendees of the strength that exists when leaders are connected to one another.
“Sometimes you leap and the net appears,” she shared. “This group is that net.”
In many ways, that became the heartbeat of the day.
A Space for Honest Conversation
Across sessions, attendees explored the issues shaping nonprofit work right now: leadership sustainability, funding, governance, partnerships, donor relationships, advocacy, artificial intelligence, trust, and the changing civic environment.
The conversations were practical, but they were also deeply human.
Leaders named what many organizations are carrying: limited capacity, staffing challenges, funding pressure, competing priorities, and the constant need to make thoughtful decisions with incomplete information.
They also named what continues to sustain them: their teams, their missions, their communities, their faith, and the relationships that remind them why the work matters.
That balance between challenge and commitment was one of the clearest takeaways from IGNITE! 2026.
The sector is navigating complexity. But it is also full of people who are still showing up with care, creativity, and a deep sense of responsibility.
From Big Ideas to Practical Tools
IGNITE! was designed to move beyond inspiration and into application.
Throughout the day, attendees engaged in sessions and conversations focused on leading stronger organizations, building better partnerships, deepening donor relationships, strengthening boards, and preparing for what comes next.
During Ask the Experts, attendees gravitated especially toward development and strategic planning, reflecting two urgent needs across the sector: how to sustain the work financially and how to lead with clarity in a rapidly changing environment.
Other conversations focused on AI, governance, communications, human resources, evaluation, legal considerations, and organizational infrastructure.
Together, these sessions reflected something nonprofit leaders know well: impact requires more than passion.
It requires tools, systems, strategy, and trusted spaces where leaders can learn from one another.
Connection Was the Throughline
While the sessions offered valuable insight, the energy of the day came from the people in the room.
Attendees reconnected with familiar faces, met new collaborators, learned alongside peers, and spent the day surrounded by people who understand the realities of nonprofit work.
That kind of connection matters.
For many leaders, IGNITE! was more than a conference. It was a reminder that they are part of a larger ecosystem of people asking similar questions, carrying similar responsibilities, and imagining what is possible for South Florida’s communities.
By the Numbers
This year’s IGNITE! brought together more than 400 attendees, with leaders representing hundreds of organizations and affiliations across South Florida and beyond.
But the numbers only tell part of the story.
The real impact could be felt in the conversations that continued after sessions ended, the notes attendees carried home, the connections made across sectors, and the shared commitment to strengthening the nonprofit community together.
The Power of Us Continues
IGNITE! 2026 reminded us that the nonprofit sector is not short on vision, talent, or heart.
What leaders need are spaces to gather, tools to strengthen their work, opportunities to collaborate, and a community that reminds them they do not have to navigate this moment alone.
That is the power of us.
