Beyond Fundraising: A Guide for Nonprofit Sustainability

Nonprofit leaders and directors know that the key to sustainable programming lies in consistent funding, and one of the best ways to tap into consistent funding is to leverage the resources and connections of your organization to have multiple revenue streams.

A heavy reliance on one or two sources can cripple your organization if those resources dry up. Relying only on government grants can put you in a serious bind if your program loses approval due to mistakes in grant reporting. On the other hand, if your main source of revenue is from individual donors, you may find yourself losing donors if their finances are disrupted. Having a healthy mix of sources can be the key to sustainability.

Examples of Funding Sources for Nonprofits:

Individual donors

According to Giving USA, individual donors accounted for $319 Billion of charitable giving in 2023. Individual donors are a key source of funding for nonprofits and often their gifts come with fewer program restrictions than grants, and you must incorporate them into your fundraising strategy. They can be cultivated in a number of ways such as leveraging the relationships of your founders and board members, using digital marketing to build awareness and engagement, employing crowdfunding channels, and more. However, you don’t want to solely rely on individual gifts.

Grants

Large grants from local, state, and federal governments can be game-changing for nonprofits. This source of funding can allow you to staff up, expand your programming, and lend your organization credibility. However, grants from these sources can also have a cumbersome application process, be restrictive, and require a lot of reporting that is time-consuming and often confusing.  While receiving these large sums of money can make a positive impact on your organization, it can be risky to rely solely on grant funding.

Foundation Funding

According to that same Giving USA report, Foundations were the second largest source of funding for nonprofits, coming in at $105 Billion. Foundation money can be a great source of revenue to include in you fundraising strategy, but they also come with some parameters such as being targeted for specific groups and organization types, so they cannot be a sole source of funding.

Membership Programs

Turning your donors into members who receive benefits that are relevant to your mission, can encourage consistent engagement and be a good source of recuring revenue. While membership programs alone are often not enough to sustain an annual budget, they are a beneficial source of revenue that you should consider adding to your fundraising strategy.

Earned Income (Sales)

Selling a product or providing a service that is relevant to your cause can be another great source of recurring income for your nonprofit. You may want to consider renting out office space, offering training workshops, or creating a product to sell. If you have the adequate infrastructure, staff, and resources to create and sell products, this could be a great addition to your fundraising strategy. You may also consider ways to incorporate your service population into this revenue stream.

Diversifying your nonprofit’s revenue streams is not just a strategy; it’s a necessity for long-term sustainability and impact. While it’s crucial to recognize the potential of each funding source, it’s equally important to understand the unique challenges and requirements they bring. Balancing these diverse streams – from individual donations and grants to foundation support and innovative earned income strategies – ensures your organization remains resilient, adaptable, and poised for growth.
