Then, after obtaining his law degree and before starting his L.L.M. in Taxation program at N.Y.U. School of Law, Hank served his country in Vietnam as an Army J.A.G. officer in the 1st Calvary Division, earning two Bronze Stars for his actions during combat. He remained in the Army Reserve until 2003, retiring with the final rank of Lt. Colonel.
Professionally, Hank worked at Mershon, Sawyer, Johnston, Dunwody, and Cole, where he practiced law for over 20 years. After his time at Mershon, Hank was a partner at Akerman for almost thirty years, where he remained until his death. In addition, he was a past Chair of the Tax Section of the Florida Bar and was honored to receive the Gerald T. Hart Outstanding Florida Tax Attorney award named after his good friend Gerry.
Many of you will have known Hank since he worked with numerous charitable organizations in South Florida. He leaves a remarkable legacy of caring and service, including working closely with former Miami-Dade County Commissioner Ruth Shack at the Dade Community Foundation (now the Miami Foundation) and co-founding PhilanthropyMiami. Hank blazed a trail and authored volumes on our collective behalf.
We will miss Hank’s direct manner, towering intellect, and sharp wit. We will miss Hank when we gather to solve problems and develop strategy. We will miss Hank when we raise a glass to celebrate success. It was our great joy to have Hank and his lovely wife, Linda, as our dinner companions each summer as he invariably asked, “Is our mission still relevant?”
While we will miss Hank, we are grateful to have known and served alongside him. And we are immeasurably thankful for his daughter, Kristina, Hank’s living legacy, and our dear colleague.
